Our main products are Crystalyte hub motors & related parts, available for front or rear wheels, available to fit any of the following rim sizes: 16", 20", 24", 26" and 700C.
See note in FAQ for important information about choosing front or rear hub motors and guidelines re: rims, spokes and correct rim sizing.
Due to a handful of front fork failures, we are now encouraging all customers, excluding trike owners, to buy rear hub motors. Ezee motors are currently only available in front hubs, so all the precautions apply: Steel forks only, use torque arms if needed.
There are two basic types of hub motors: brushless and brushed. They are both straightforward, reliable and come with a
6-month, unlimited mileage warranty.
1) Brushless are simpler, with virtually no moving parts except for the two axle bearings. They are very efficient and offer longer range and more torque than brushed motors.
2) Brushed motors use older technology but cost less. Brushes will eventually have to be replaced, probably after 2 or 3 years of normal use.
Crystalyte hub motors come in a variety of winding configurations, some more for speed, some more for torque. The preferred model is "407", which represents a good balance between speed (max assist is about 34 km/h on a 26" rim) and torque (able to handle most hills with light pedalling assist). Other models are available for specific riding needs or conditions.
Besides the hub motor itself, three other components are needed to make your bike electric:
1) Controller: A small black box converts the DC current from the battery into a usable signal for the hub motor. The controller mounts onto the frame, usually below the bike seat.
2) Battery pack: These are available in a variety of choices depending on your needs:
The battery pack comes complete with a charger, wiring harness and fuse in a durable rack bag which mounts on your bike rack.
3) Throttle: The hub motor is engaged by a thumb or twist-style throttle, depending on your preference, mounted on the handlebars.
4) Optional accessories: Cycle Analyst (electronic dashboard), spare battery packs, second charger for at the office, etc...
