Garry,

Attached are some photos of my eBike. It's a Xootr Swift with a Crystalyte 400 on the front. The battery is in the back in a dry bag. The controller is attached to the top tube covered by a helmet cover.

Works really well.

Also attached is a photo of the eBike pulling an experimental plow. I gave the plow up though.

By the way all my battery problems were resolved by following your advice of discharge/charge cycles.

Thanks!
- Jakub

From Peter in Toronto:
Story:
The idea to get some sort of two-wheeled motorized transport came to me after a trip to Cuba. Local Cuban laws allow easy access to all kinds of mopeds as far you willing to pay money and have something that resembles a license. The pleasure that I got from riding could be put on the same line as other positive experiences that were accessible on the Island of Freedom. The feeling of acceleration, hot wind in the face, impressive distances covered by simply twisting the throttle – those elements of the ride’s magic held me captive. I decided to have it all at home, in Canada. However, my plan to get a moped was never realized. There are several factors that make owning a gasoline-powered vehicle in Toronto not too attractive. Licensing, insurance, refueling cost, garage cost, complicated maintenance, endless traffic jams… and you can’t ride it offroad because it is a subject to HTA regulations! That is when I decided to get an E-bike, a conversion kit in particular. Pre-built e-bikes are weak and I wanted something with a large potential. Scooter-looking e-bikes are better, but they are unimaginably heavy, uncustomizable and cannot be stored on a balcony on the twentieth floor. The kit I got became the best solution.

From Ebikeconversions.com

The Kit/ Bike Specs:
Motor: Brushless Crystalyte 407
Controller: 20 Amp Pedal-first
Batteries: 4x12V SLAs, 48V total
Throttle: Thumb throttle converted to full twist
Battery compartment: wooden box attached with thick wire
Rear Rack: “Axiom”, specifically built for dual suspension bikes
Charger: “Pride” charger, 24V. Batteries are conveniently reconnected from “1x48” configuration to “2x24” for each charging.
Ammeter: simple analogue ammeter shows current drawn for the batteries. Very useful for trip planning to estimate how far will you go. Distance is estimated if capacity of batteries and speed at given current are known. Ammeter was taken from an old charger.
Speedometer: standard digital speedometer, “Bell”

Phil sent in this article from his worksite newsletter, "The Garlic Press", at Spud! in Calgary:

"Electric Bikes, A Great Transportation Alternative"

With rising awareness of environmental concerns, and rising gasoline prices, more and more Canadians are discovering electric bikes (ebikes) as a great alternative to traditional cars, trucks, vans and SUVs, especially for shorter trips like commutes and errands.

You can buy a complete 'off-the-shelf' ebike at major hardware stores, or convert your already favourite bike in the garage to an ebike by adding a hub motor kit. Converting has some advantages - lower costs, higher quality, plus customizable bike style and electric components. To learn more visit Ebikeconversions.com.

Spud! employee Philip Sarsons says, "Ebiking for me has been a complete reinvention of the wheel! Until 1995, I was an avid cyclist, but the spring of that year I was too eager the first day out and did serious damage to my knee. Ebiking has made me mobile again on my most favourite way to travel. Hills and headwinds are things I sneeze at and zoom through as if I were 22 again! My ride to work is 40 minutes, compared to the drive which is 30, reducing my carbon output in a major way! I see other cyclists, and I wish for them the same freedoms and confidence in traffic which I now enjoy. Riding my bike to work is more exhilarating than coffee!"

It's just....  WONDERFUL!!!  I'm having a totally great time using the ebike!!   I'm going faster with my 700$ kit than those with a 10000$ bike!!!   I smile too much when I drive it, so my new problem is that I tend to catch bugs in my opened mouth....!!!

Excerpt from "Yukon News":
Mike ordered his Chrystalyte conversion kit from a home-based Edmonton business called Ebike Conversions (
www.ebikeconversions.com) and found the prices lower and the support and advice unbeatable. And since receiving his product from them a few months ago, his life has changed.

Now I almost always bike," he says. "I hardly ever drive my car to work anymore."

1st of all , let me tell you what a thrill it has been for the past few days, riding around on my new e-bike. As of this morning, I have already put 90 km on it's old frame. ( I just had to make a very minor adjustment to get the speedometer working properly)...I absolutely LOVE it...and my friends all think it's very cool as well. (AND LATER...) Did I tell you that I put over 1000 kms on my bike in just over 3 1/2 months? I love it....wish I could still ride it, but spring will come soon enough.

Whew! I just got back from my maiden voyage. It was wonderful. No problem at all, Mario did a great job installing it and my bike looks like an ordinary bike. I ran into Stan, the other ebiker that you introduced us to. He was impressed with the setup. Anyway I hope the weather holds out, I have so many places to go and so little time. Maybe I'll brave the cold and keep on biking. You've been so helpful and I'm glad you were able to get the kit to us. (AND LATER...)  We sure are enjoying our bikes. It never ceases to amaze me whenever I get that power. It's great.

"...I did my first e-ride today. Lots of fun and all of the help we needed for the difficult areas. If you felt a nice warm wind blow by, that was a pleasant thought from us.
Thanks again..."
